City Scenes Magazine Talks to Final Draft
Going into my interview with D-Nyce, Fashun, Lucky, Choirboy and Sincere, collectively known as Final Draft, my initial thought was, “Oh no, not another cheesy, watered down R&B group.” But after only a few minutes into our conversation, I was completely won over by the Atlanta, Georgia based quintet. In addition to being extremely charming and polite, every member of Final Draft can sing, dispelling any of my prior notions about this being just another group in which only 1 or 2 of its members possess the bulk of the talent. I was so blown away, I cut our interview short to get on the phone with our Editor-in-Chief to suggest they be given a full-fledged layout in the next print edition of City Scenes Magazine. To that end, think of this as your introduction to Final Draft…
CSM: How did the group come together?
Fashun: I was blessed to be one of the early members of the group, but our manager had the idea of creating a super male group. And for her to make that group, she wanted to make sure all the components was correct, so she wanted the group based off of integrity, personality, image, and of course, talent. So once she was satisfied that she got all the components with the members of the group that is right now, we became Final Draft.
CSM: The album is called Final Draft, the first single is “Get At Cha.” To be honest, I haven’t heard it yet – can you describe the sound of “Get At Cha?”
Fashun: “Get At Cha” is an up tempo club joint produced by Swole, and it shows a real edgier side of the group. The song really describes us trying to get with a girl we see, that could potentially be the girlfriend, your main one. That’s what it’s explaining, trying to get at somebody you really digging.
D-Nyce: The video is out right now for it too. It just debuted on 106 & Park as the “New Joint of the Day.”
Sincere: In order to get that on the countdown, ya’ll can text fin to 79922 or you can go to BET.com/106andpark, click voting, and select your boys Final Draft to get us on the countdown.
CSM: Do you guys do your own writing?
FD: We do our own writing…
CSM: Are you going to be giving us the typical, sexed up R&B?
Choirboy: No, our music is very versatile because we have different people in the group. We have the hip-hop side, which is Fashun, he’s the rapper in the group. We have pop and the R&B. The music that we sing is very positive; we try to uplift the women and uplift people in general, so we not just talking about sex, sex, sex.
CSM: Alright, because you guys are getting cosigned by Ralph Tresvant, so you have some big shoes to fill. Staying on the topic of Ralph Tresvant, the comparisons made in your media kit, New Edition, Boyz II Men, groups like that don’t come along everyday. I don’t know of any contemporary group that’s left the impression that those groups have. Are you guys feeling any pressure from being compared to those groups?
Sincere: We really blessed to be compared to the likes of a New Edition or Boyz II Men. We really do just feel blessed. We’re working with Ralph Tresvant, and we’re just absorbing the wisdom and everything he’s learned from his journey. We just really feeling blessed right now.
CSM: Okay, even groups like New Edition have gone through things that every group goes through. By the way, who’s the Bobby in the group?
FD: (laughing) There’s no Bobby…
CSM: How are you guys planning on avoiding the pitfalls of being in a group?
Fashun: A lot of things we talk about with Ralph are those types of situations, so he tries to keep us from going through the same trials and tribulations that they went through. And I think that if a group has a common goal, and the same respect level for each other, I don’t think that those types of problems will arise as long as everybody stays on the same track. So we try to make sure and keep each other on track and make sure that first God is in our heart, and we stay moving forward and positive.
CSM: What’s the next single going to be?
Choirboy: The next single is going to be crazy; it’s actually one of my favorite songs on the album. I’m hoping it’ll be the next single; it’s called Broken. It’s an uptempo song that gives us a chance as young men to explain to the females how we get our hearts broken too.
CSM: Any plans outside of music?
Sincere: Whatever God has in store for us to do in the future we welcome it with open arms. Right now, we focused on this album, this tour, April 13th the album drops; self-titled Final Draft. The video, like I said, just debuted on 106 & Park.
CSM: Any last words?
D-Nyce: We’d like to say thank you to our fans. We’d like to shout out Earl Jam/EMG [Executive Music Group], Universal, and our manager.
