Long awaited and long overdue, Sade has re-emerged with the release of a new album; Soldier of Love.  On February 17, 2010 the album reached #1 worldwide, reaching 501,000 copies sold (not to mention the thousands of uncountable free downloads undoubtedly copped).   It’s reported on sade.com that the face of the group Sade, Helen Folasade Adu, was to appear on the Wanda Sykes show; and yet her appearance was nothing more than a mere skit and not one ounce of a performance.  It was a letdown, and as a fan of Sade and a hopeful fan of the Wanda Sykes show-I felt dismissed.  That’s okay, though-she has recently appeared and performed elsewhere-and I loved her on Jimmy Kimmel Live.

So let’s forget the letdown from the anticipation of the Wanda Sykes show.  I can take that, especially when Sade has come back with that special something that the world’s been missing all these years.  See, I can remember as a child growing up in Atlanta and hitting up West End Mall with my grandmother and hearing the music of Sade coming out of the Muzak systems, “Smooth Operator” and thinking of beautiful Adu “She is who I’d like to be”.  The fact that she was a writer and songstress whose ballads gave even a deeper meaning to love inspired me to do more.  Her look, resembling my own, gave reverence to the beauty of the “plain” yet exotic look that a woman of color could embody.  I can remember all of those things vividly as if they were just yesterday.

And then *poof*, she was gone-and the group Sade was gone.  I can understand that as an artist your personal life gets ambushed at times and it can become too much.  Not giving into the “promotional game” and also taking time out for her own personal life, we’ve [the fans] have waited for about twenty years for this come back.  I won’t hold a grudge.  I’m too much of a fan for that, and am honestly grateful that Sade has graced us with lyrical magic once again.  I missed it.

So I checked out her video “Soldier of Love”, and fell in love with Adu all over again.  That sultry voice, those crimson red lips, that sexy ponytail….I could go on and on-but I’ll let you check it out for yourself.  I’m still recovering from the eargasm from hearing those sounds again. The visual was exceptional as well.

Soldier of Love is available on iTunes and Amazon, and you can learn more on http://sade.com .  Enjoy.

Well Well Well!! Here I am.. Never thought I would be so excited to be doing my first review as a music reviewer. I am pleased to be doing this and it is an honor (blah blah blah). In my column  I will review the 2 new releases of the week, as well as 1 independent artist. All Indie submissions are encouraged to contact atticalundy@cityscenesmag.com .

With all that being said, Hurrrrr We go!!!!!

GUCCI MANE “The State VS  Radric Davis”-

In Nov. 2009 I remember hearing “Lemonade” on 106 and Park thinking to myself, I know this aint this dudes single. I thought it was SUPER wack and from hearing “Wasted” prior to that, I felt Gucci would FOLD!! But now in Mid-January, cold weather, no swimsuits or beachy videos, Gucci Mane has not only gained me as a fan, but he has arguably the best album on the streets right now. I wont hesitate to say that I am ridin’ to it like super hard, and I give it the top ranking “BIG FACES” award.

Highlights: Heavy, Stupid Wild (feat Lil Wayne/Cam’ron), All About the Money (feat Rick Ross), Lemonade, Kush is my Cologne.

LowLights: Bingo (feat Soulja Boy/Waka Flocka Flame) I don’t know if Soulja Boy is trying to take his rap game to hell but he is on course, and Waka Flocka’s name and style cont. to make him a 1-hitter quitter, Wasted Remix is definitely a perfect example of the South not reppin to our lyrical potential..

ALICIA KEYS “THE ELEMENT OF FREEDOM”

Alicia Keys is not a real hard album to review. I would rather give you the story of why I copped the album. I was chillin at the studio, driving down Kushington ave., and I seen the video for “Try Sleeping with a Broken Heart”. The drums were crazy, video was crazy, but most of all, THE FULL BODY SUIT SEALED THE DEAL!! Alicia Keys is the truth and if you got her previous releases, she doesn’t stray too far from those.

Of course she gets the “BIG FACES” award.

Highlights: The album can ride out if you are in the whip, or cleaning the crib, or “cutting” somn. “I’m Ready” (my second fav on the album) was co-written by up & coming artist Drake and shows his wide range of writing skills.

Lows: Some of the songs, like the previous album, sound like they are stolen from previous hits (ex. “Love is Blind” sounds like “Exodus” by Bob Marley). Also despite having the baddest 2 broads in R&B on one record, “Put it in A Love Song” feat Beyonce is a song that did not have the CLIMAX I was looking for. Im sure they’ll do a video and pull it off!
